Today is the feast day of St Francis of Assisi, the Patron Saint of Animals. It is also World Animal Day. Many churches are celebrating with animal welfare and animal blessing services.
We should remember and pray for all animals, especially those suffering in factory farms, in research laboratories and those being used for entertainment.
One of the events arranged for World Animal Day by South West Action for Hares was a lobbying of MPs asking for a ban on snares.
Whether snares are intended for a certain species perceived as a nuisance by farmers, landowners and gamekeepers, or trap and kill companion animals, they are indefensibly cruel and it is appalling that they are permitted to be used.
